Looking and feeling good about ourselves takes time and effort. But it is worth the work we put in because nothing is more important than good health. At certain times of our life, we feel less than satisfied with our outward appearance. Our weight fluctuates and this is perfectly natural. For the times we do need to shed a few pounds, there are some simple steps we can take.
- Identify Unhealthy Habits
We all do things that are not good for us, even if they feel good at the time. It’s worth taking some time to think about a normal week. Is there anything you’re doing that could be changed? For example, what about your morning coffee? If you’re picking up a cappuccino on the way to work each morning, the calorie content may not even register. Or has your morning tea and a biscuit become a regular occurrence?
Identify any habits you have formed that may be unhelpful. You don’t have to deprive yourself. Instead, consider cutting down or making healthier replacements. For example, buy a coffee every other day instead. Or swap to skimmed milk.
- Make Simple Adjustments You Won’t Feel
When you’re trying to lose weight, exercise is important. Before dashing off to join the gym, look for areas of your life that could contribute to exercise. For example, take the stairs rather than the lift. If your office is on the 12th floor, consider walking up a couple of flights. Then take the lift the rest of the way. If you get the train or bus to work, get off one or two stops earlier and walk. Are there any projects you’ve been meaning to tackle? Gardening and DIY burn calories, and you would be killing two birds with one stone. It’s possible to get fit and lose weight without leaving your home.
- Don’t Drink Your Calories
Some drinks contain a lot of calories. It’s easy to forget this when we grab something to quench our thirst. Make sure you check labels before you buy. Some fizzy drinks contain a lot of sugar.
Make healthy choices when it comes to tea and coffee. Switch to skimmed milk or don’t drink it at all. Flavour tea with lemon instead. If you have a sweet tooth, miracle berry tablets transform tastes. So healthy options still taste delicious.
Cut back on your alcohol content. Work out what you drink each week and make sure it is within recommended limits. If you socialise regularly, try having nights where you drink sugar-free soft drinks only. Or intersperse alcoholic drinks with soft drinks.
- Count Your Steps
If you have an office job, it’s likely that you will spend a large proportion of time sitting at a desk. Some companies invest in standing desks for their employees. Where this not an option, make sure you take lots of breaks and walk around.
It is recommended that we take 10,000 steps each day to keep fit. Invest in a pedometer or fitness app and count your steps. Start small. Work out how many steps you already take and build up slowly.
If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may need to consider a more structured approach. But for small amounts, and for maintaining a healthy weight, make a few simple adjustments to your life.
